Jaw joints and muscle disorders

Do you suffer from a protruding jaw or a receding jaw?

The team at the Bachmayer Orthodontic Clinic in Norwest is experienced in combining orthodontic care with surgery to give you the best possible results.

For some individuals with severe jaw problems, a combination of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery may be required. Dr Bachmayer works closely with a number of excellent Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons. He respects the needs and sensitivities of patients requiring the team approach for their treatment, and is able to refer patients who require orthognathic surgery.

What is
orthognathic surgery?

Orthognathic surgery is a form of dental surgery that focuses on repositioning the jaws to their proper alignment, and comes in the form of singular or double jaw surgery. This surgery corrects severe jaw misalignments or malocclusions that could not be corrected with orthodontic treatment alone.

Orthognathic surgery also allows us to help you achieve proper facial harmony.
When the jaw is rotated or repositioned, the soft tissues and other elements of the face such as the nose, cheeks and lips all move accordingly – creating a more desirable dento-facial aesthetic.

Who needs this
type of surgery?

Those who have greatly misaligned jaws, bite problems or have a disproportionate facial harmony due to the position of their jaws are generally ideal candidates for jaw surgery. Surgery may also be recommended for more complex cases where orthodontic treatment alone will not achieve desirable results.

How can orthodontics and jaw surgery work together?

If required, orthognathic surgery will usually be the last stage of your treatment. Orthodontics will be performed for the first 12 months to properly align the teeth, after which surgery will be performed while the braces are still fixed to the teeth.

The treatment duration with orthognathic surgery is generally 18 months. By combining surgery and orthodontics, we are able to maximise your facial and dental aesthetics.
It is the ultimate treatment combination to ensure the best results for severe or
complex cases.
