Orthodontic treatment for children and teens

Give your child the best chance of a beautiful smile

The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends children receive an orthodontic assessment at seven years of age. Although this is too young to fit a child with braces, there are a number of benefits your child can gain through early assessment.

Why should my
child see an orthodontist?

Children’s jaws and teeth are much easier to manipulate and treat, since they are in their early stages of dental development. This means your child may be able to avoid extensive orthodontic treatment during adolescence or adulthood.

An early assessment allows Dr Bachmayer to identify any key issues before they become problematic. It also allows us to perform early intervention if necessary.

Benefits of an
early consultation

By performing an early orthodontic assessment at our clinic in Norwest we can:

  • Reduce or eliminate the need for extraction
  • Avoid the need for future jaw surgery
  • Correct harmful oral habits
  • Progress speech development
  • Encourage the jaw to grow correctly
  • Simplify and shorten treatment time for full braces
  • Increase the stability of final treatment results
  • Guide permanent teeth into alignment
  • Preserve or create space for erupting permanent teeth
  • Reduce potential damage to jaw joints
  • Identify upper airway obstruction and problems related to mouth-breathing
  • Create facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
  • Reduce the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth.

Through early planning your child will benefit from becoming familiar with the orthodontic staff, the office environment and treatment planning. This will also ensure a pleasant experience during their orthodontic treatment.

Familiarising your child with orthodontics and dental care will also help them make positive associations with oral health which will help them maintain good dental health regimes later in life.

Treatment for teens

The teenage years are a common time for young people to get braces. During adolescence facial growth accelerates which helps orthodontic appliances move teeth and jaws more efficiently for better results. At this time, a teenager's teeth have not yet stabilised (this happens around 20 years of age), meaning teeth are much easier to move to their desired position!

At the Bachmayer Orthodontic Clinic, we have a range of orthodontic treatment options for our teenage patients. You can choose braces that blend in with your natural tooth colour or, if you’re feeling adventurous, have some fun with colourful elastics! If you don’t want anyone to see you’re having orthodontic treatment, you even have the option of Invisalign® for teens.

Invisalign® for teens

Invisalign®’s clear plastic, custom made aligners are one of the most popular orthodontic options for teenagers. They can be taken out for eating, brushing and flossing, as well as for playing sport or musical instruments. And to help you remember to put the aligners back in, we can include build-in compliance indicators to help you - and your parents - ensure the aligners are being worn for the required 22 hours per day. What's more, Invisalign® aligners are virtually invisible, so even your friends won't know you're having treatment.

Invisalign® aligners are a registered medical device, you should always read and follow the label and the instructions of your treating orthodontist.
