Do I need to wear retainers forever? Your guide to life after braces

There’s nothing quite like the moment your braces come off or your last Invisalign® tray clicks into place. After months - or even years - of orthodontic treatment, your teeth look straighter, your bite feels better, and your confidence is higher. But there’s one more important step to protect your new smile: wearing your retainer.

Do I need to wear retainers forever? Your guide to life after braces

At Bachmayer Orthodontic Clinic, one of the most common questions we hear is: “Do I really need to wear my retainer forever?” Let’s walk through why retainers are essential, how long you’ll need to wear one, and how to care for it to keep your smile looking great for life.

Why do I need a retainer after braces or aligners?

When your orthodontic treatment finishes, your teeth aren’t quite finished moving. While they may look perfectly aligned, the bone and tissues around them need time to stabilise. Without the support of a retainer, your teeth may slowly drift back toward their original positions - a process known as orthodontic relapse.

Wearing your retainer helps hold everything in place, giving your smile the best chance of staying beautifully straight for the long term.

How long do I need to wear my retainer?

The honest answer? For as long as you want your teeth to stay straight. Here’s how it typically works:

The first 3-6 months

Right after treatment, we recommend wearing your retainer full time - only removing it for meals, brushing, and physical activity.

6–12 months post-treatment

Once your teeth begin to settle, we’ll usually transition you to night-time wear only. This helps maintain your results while fitting more easily into your routine.

Beyond 1 year

Long-term, the best way to protect your investment is to continue wearing your retainer at night. Just a few nights a week is often enough to prevent unwanted movement - especially as we age, when teeth naturally tend to shift.

What types of retainers are there?

There are three main types of retainers commonly used after orthodontic treatment:

  • Clear removable retainers (Essix-style) These transparent, custom-moulded retainers fit snugly over your teeth. They’re comfortable, discreet, and ideal for night-time wear.
  • Fixed retainers (bonded wires) A thin metal wire is permanently bonded to the back of your front teeth. This type of retainer offers continuous protection - great for patients who may forget to wear a removable one.
  • Hawley retainers These are made from a metal wire and acrylic plate that sits on the roof of your mouth or behind your lower teeth. They’re durable and adjustable, though more visible than clear retainers. While less commonly used today, they can still be an effective option in some cases.

At Bachmayer Orthodontic Clinic, we’ll recommend the retainer that best suits your treatment, lifestyle, and long-term goals. Most of our patients receive either a clear removable retainer, a fixed bonded retainer, or a combination of both. No matter which type you have, ongoing night-time wear is key to maintaining your results.

Retainer

How to care for your retainer

Looking after your retainer is simple - but essential. Here are our top tips:

For removable retainers:

  • Rinse after removal: Rinse with cool or lukewarm water every time you take it out to prevent plaque and odour.
  • Brush daily: Use a soft toothbrush and mild soap (not toothpaste) to gently clean your retainer.
  • Soak weekly: Use a non-alcoholic retainer cleaner or denture soak to keep it fresh.
  • Avoid heat: Keep your retainer away from hot water, dishwashers, and sunny windowsills - it can warp the plastic.
  • Use the case: Always store your retainer in its case when not in use. Lost retainers are more common than you think!

For fixed retainers:

  • Floss daily: Use floss threaders or interdental brushes to clean around the wire.
  • Attend check-ups: We’ll regularly check your bonded retainer to make sure it’s secure and in good shape.
  • Contact us if it breaks: If your wire comes loose or breaks, let us know straight away. Even small shifts can impact your smile.

Wearing a retainer doesn’t have to be forever - but if you want your smile to last a lifetime, it’s worth the commitment. Think of your retainer as part of your routine - just like brushing or flossing.
