Is Invisalign® Right for You? Treatment Time and Everyday Wear Explained
Thinking about Invisalign® but not sure if you or your child is a good candidate? You are not alone. Parents often ask when to start, teens want to know how it feels day to day, and adults want clarity on timelines and whether aligners are faster than braces.
At Bachmayer Orthodontic Clinic, we use Invisalign® for children, teens and adults where it is the right clinical choice. As an Invisalign Diamond Provider, we plan treatment with 3D digital scans and monitor progress closely in person and remotely, so you know what to expect at every step.
This guide explains age suitability, how long aligners need to be worn each day, how often to change trays, what affects speed, comfort compared with braces, and whether four-year treatment is likely. By the end, you will have a clear picture of whether Invisalign® could fit your life.
Age matters: children, teens and adults
There is no single perfect age for Invisalign®. Suitability depends on dental development, jaw growth and goals.
- Children: Invisalign® First is designed for growing smiles, typically around ages 6 to 10 during Phase One treatment. It guides jaw development, creates space for erupting teeth and addresses crossbites or crowding. An assessment around age 6 to 7 helps catch issues early.
- Teens: Invisalign® Teen suits most adolescents once permanent teeth have erupted. Features track wear and accommodate late-erupting teeth Aligners work well for crowding, spacing and bite refinement, and are removable for meals and brushing.
- Adults: Healthy gums and teeth are the main criteria. Adults often choose Invisalign® for its discreet appearance and flexibility. Complex bite corrections can still be managed with aligners in specialist hands.

Daily wear and tray changes: what real life looks like
Aligners work only when worn. Recommendations:
- Wear time: ~22 hours per day, removing only for meals, snacks, coffee/tea, and brushing
- Tray changes: Usually weekly once fit and tracking are confirmed; some plans use 10–14 day changes. Intervals are personalised based on tooth movement response
- Remote monitoring: Photos and digital scans between visits reduce in-clinic trips while keeping treatment on track
How long does Invisalign® take?
- Minor cosmetic alignment: ~3 months (e.g., Invisalign Express)
- Moderate crowding/spacing: 6–12 months (Invisalign Lite)
- Comprehensive bite correction: 18–24 months in specialist care
Four-year treatment: Rare with specialist care. Extended durations usually relate to very complex problems, missed wear, missed appointments, unplanned dental issues, or treatment transfers.
Is Invisalign® faster than braces?
Sometimes. Mild to moderate alignment can be as fast or faster due to weekly tray changes. Complex bite changes may be similar or more efficient with braces. The goal is predictable treatment with minimal disruption.
Comfort and everyday life vs braces
- Gentle pressure on first day of a new tray; temporary speech changes settle quickly
- Aligners have no brackets or wires; ulcers are less common
- Removable for meals, simplifying oral hygiene
- Braces do not depend on daily wear, which some patients find easier
What speeds progress (and what slows it)
- Consistency: Wear ~22 hours per day
- Clean fit: Seat aligners fully, avoid heat that warps trays
- Regular reviews: In-clinic and remote monitoring
Progress slows with inconsistent wear, missed changes, lost/cracked trays, or new dental needs. Lost trays should revert to the previous aligner until advised.
